The power of Ultra Necroma GX and Malamar

Hello everyone! This is Elena from Gaia Storm TCG and it is my pleasure to be back once again. Everyone who has played the game long enough will for sure remember the iconic combination of Rayquaza EX and Eelektrik back in 2012. Rayeels was a deck that achieved great results due to the raw power of the dragon legenday and the recycling abilities of the Eelektrik. Today, six years later, everyone is talking about Necrozma GX and Malamar, the heir of that strategy from the Black and White era. So…what makes the deck so good? Let’s see a basic skeleton and some cool tech options!

The basic idea is to set up 2-3 Malamar and start looping from there. With a metal energy, Necrozma discards psychic ones to deal massive amounts of damage. Not only does this legendary do more damage that Rayquaza did back then, meaning that it requires less Malamar in the field, but it also sets up pretty fast. Thanks to Mysterious Treasure, the deck has access to practically every combo piece easier than any other deck right now. A combination of Treasures and Ultra balls helps to evolve our Inkay and discard the energy in the process early on.

Some unnegotiable cards that need to go in the deck are Dawn Wings Necrozma and Mew from Fates Collide. Dawn Wings is like a new version of Keldeo EX, providing free retreat with a float stone attached, but it can actually come in handy given that it has some solid attacks. Regarding Mew, is the ideal one prize attacker for the deck, capable of copying the deadly attacks of Ultra Necrozma and only giving one prize when knocked out.  There are some people that run Prism Star Lunala as well as an alternative way of recycling the energies from the discard pile.

The deck of course has some serious enemies. Gabotoxin Garbodor is difficult to deal with if there are no blowers available. Also, when an opponent plays Parallel City it becomes really difficult to continue dealing damage because we will need to limit out bench and loose something valuable (a Malamar or Necrozma) in the process. Lastly, let’s not forget that Ultra Necrozma is weak to Fairy and that maybe Gardevoir GX can start seeing again some play with the help of Diantha.

It is true that it is still very soon to determine if a deck is going to take the metagame by storm of not but Necrozma truly seem to have some potential. Try the deck yourself to see its true power!
