Steven's Metagross – a Budget Deck for Everyone!

Hello Pokemon Fans!

As usual, we like to cover some of the latest budget decks for any type of player, but mainly built for those who can’t afford the top competitive expensive cards, but still want to be at the competitive level somehow.

This is one of the latest decks from the Celestial Storm set! This deck is also built for the next rotation of the Sun & Moon on format. Metagross is a stage 2 Pokemon with a 170 HP and it is a regular non GX attacker, meaning that in a GX match it will trade one prize for two prize cards. Some decks won’t be even able to touch him with the single attack. It has the Extend ability, which says that as long as Metagross in the active position, our turn won’t end if we play Steven's Resolve. This allows us to search our deck for any 3 cards!

With the ability to search our deck for any three cards without ending the turn, Metagross can be a really nice rogue deck with huge potential. The biggest problem for Metagross is that the Meteor Mash attack can only do 60 damage as the base attack. With a few Dhelmise on the bench and Choice Band, that base damage can be increased from 60 up to 100+. The good thing about Meter Mash is the fact that the base 60 damage will be doubled on our next turn. Metagross will be a two hit attacker deck and sometimes Acerola played from our opponent might be a huge problem for it. There are a few ways to play this deck. It can be played with Alolan Vulpix for the setup and also with a single Alolan Ninetales GX. Alolan Ninetales GX can use his strong GX attack for a damage swap, but it can also snipe on the bench! It can also be  played with some backup attackers like Buzzwole, Delphox, Shaymin and with Counter Energy. Some more options are that it can also be played with Celesteela and Jirachi Prism Star as well as with the Crushing and Enhanced Hammers for the energy control.

The best tech cards for this deck are Max Potion for full recovery if our opponent is not capable to take a one hit k.o., Counter Catcher if we have more prize cards left than our opponent, (we can simply search our deck for Counter Catcher and switch our opponent active Pokemon with one of the benched Pokemon - this can be done with the Steven’s Resolve), and obviously Pal Pad so we can have Stevens Resolve play for any three cards that we need at the specific moment in the game. Overall the complete deck does not cost too much. The most expensive card in this deck would be a Jirachi Prism Star. We don’t even need to play Cynthia since we can play Tate & Liza and have two different options to draw refresh our hand with the fresh hand of five, or just to switch our active Pokemon with one of our benched Pokemon. The reason why I’m saying this right now is just because Cynthia is around $7-8, and if we want to play on a budget, we really don’t want to spend 30$ on four Cynthia’s.

Overall, this deck has a lot of potential and it can also be really fun to play. You can find all of the latest cards including Metagross in our store!
